Gigified Knowledge Work: Understanding Knowledge Gaps When Knowledge Work and On-Demand Work Intersect

Online freelance platforms can transform knowledge work. However, 'gigification' also presents challenges, including how workers access and work with knowledge, which prior research has not examined. Through a qualitative interview study, we identify disparities in freelancers who for enterprise companies are able to utilize as part of their work, when compared traditional employees similar organizations. We examine 38 (21 freelancers, 17 employees) deploy skillfully mobilize resources meet needs. find that both understand own ability act knowledgeably dynamic, collaborative, negotiated emergent accomplishment. the dynamic dimensions - such helping others see meaning value creating ties between only minimally-legitimized minimally-supported by organizing structures tools. present our results 'knowledge gaps', propose design recommendations reduce these gaps consequently make on-demand more effective sustainable.
